Comprehensive Care for Pelvic Venous Disorders Expert Diagnosis and Advanced Treatment Options for Chronic Pelvic Pain
At Perth Vascular Clinic, we understand how debilitating chronic pelvic pain can be — especially when the underlying cause is difficult to identify. One often overlooked but treatable cause are Pelvic Venous Disorders, also known as Pelvic Congestion Syndrome.
Led by Dr Marek Garbowski, a highly experienced Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon with a special interest in pelvic venous conditions, our clinic offers a comprehensive and compassionate approach to diagnosing and treating venous causes of chronic pelvic pain.
What Are Pelvic Venous Disorders?
Pelvic Venous Disorders refer to problems with the veins in the pelvic area that cause them to become enlarged, stretched, or not work properly. This leads to poor blood flow, pressure build-up, and a range of symptoms – most commonly ongoing pelvic pain.
Just like varicose veins in the legs, pelvic veins can become weak or damaged, causing them to swell and hold too much blood. When this happens in the veins around the uterus, ovaries, or pelvis, it can cause discomfort and pain – especially after standing or sitting for long periods, during or after intercourse, or around menstruation.
Who Is affected by PeVD?
Pelvic Venous Disorders (PeVD) primarily affect women of childbearing age, particularly those who have experienced multiple pregnancies. Pregnancy places significant strain on the pelvic veins due to increased blood volume, hormonal changes that relax vein walls, and the physical pressure of the growing uterus on pelvic blood vessels. These factors can contribute to vein dilation, valve dysfunction, and ultimately, venous congestion in the pelvis.
However, PeVD is not limited to this group. Women of all ages can develop pelvic venous disorders, including those who have never been pregnant. Hormonal influences, genetic predisposition, and anatomical variations in vein structure can all play a role.
Symptoms of PeVD include:
- Dull, aching pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis, lasting more than six months
- Pain that worsens after prolonged standing or at the end of the day
- Discomfort during or after intercourse
- Heaviness or pressure in the pelvis
- Visible varicose veins in the upper thighs, buttocks, or vulva
- Bladder symptoms such as urgency or frequency
What Causes PeVD?
Pelvic venous disorders are generally caused by vein dysfunction or compression that leads to pressure, congestion, and pain but there can be a number of reasons.
