What is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. A thin catheter is passed inside the diseased vein under ultrasound guidance, and radiofrequency energy is used to heat the vein wall. This causes the vein to contract, seal shut, and eventually be absorbed by the surrounding tissue. Blood is then naturally redirected through healthy veins nearby.
Which Conditions Can Be Treated?
RFA is primarily used to treat the underlying cause of varicose veins, specifically incompetent (leaking) valves in the great saphenous vein or small saphenous vein. It is also effective for patients with aching and heavy legs caused by venous insufficiency, and for those with chronic leg swelling or early venous skin changes.
How is the Procedure Performed?
The procedure is performed in clinic under local anaesthetic. A small amount of numbing fluid (tumescent anaesthesia) is injected around the vein under ultrasound guidance to protect the surrounding tissue and reduce discomfort. A catheter is then inserted into the vein through a tiny skin puncture and slowly withdrawn while delivering radiofrequency energy, sealing the vein as it goes. The procedure typically takes 45 to 60 minutes and most patients walk out of the clinic shortly afterwards.
Benefits and Recovery
RFA is well tolerated and is associated with less bruising and a faster return to activity compared with traditional varicose vein surgery. A compression stocking is worn for one to two weeks following the procedure to support healing. Most patients can return to work and light exercise within a day or two. Any surface bulging veins that remain after RFA can be treated with a separate procedure such as sclerotherapy or ambulatory phlebectomy.

Conditions we can treat with Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Below are some of the conditions we can treat with Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). Click on the below to learn more or get in touch with us to request a consultation.
Aching Legs
Persistent leg aching or discomfort can point to an underlying vascular condition such as varicose veins, poor circulation or deep vein thrombosis. Getting the right diagnosis is the first step to lasting relief.
Chronic Leg Swelling
Persistent leg swelling can result from venous insufficiency, lymphoedema or conditions affecting the heart, kidneys or liver. Early specialist assessment helps identify the cause and prevent long-term complications.
