What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a chemical solution (sclerosant) is injected directly into a diseased vein. The solution irritates the inner lining of the vein, causing it to swell, stick together, and eventually scar and close. Over the following weeks, the body absorbs the closed vein and it fades from view.
Types of Sclerotherapy
Liquid sclerotherapy is used for fine spider veins and small surface varicosities. For larger varicose veins, the sclerosant is mixed with air to create a foam (foam sclerotherapy), which fills and coats the vein more effectively. Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) uses real-time ultrasound imaging to target deeper veins that cannot be seen on the surface, making it suitable for more significant varicose veins. Sclerotherapy is also commonly used to treat residual or recurrent veins after other vein procedures.
How is the Procedure Performed?
Sclerotherapy is performed in clinic with no general anaesthetic required. Using a very fine needle, the sclerosant is injected into the targeted veins. Multiple injections may be given during a single session. The procedure typically takes 20 to 45 minutes. Some mild stinging or cramping during the injection is normal and settles quickly.
Recovery and What to Expect
Patients can walk out of the clinic immediately after sclerotherapy and resume most activities the same day. Compression stockings are worn for one to two weeks to improve results and reduce the chance of bruising. Treated veins will gradually fade over several weeks. More than one session is often needed to achieve the best result, particularly for larger or more extensive vein networks. Dr Garbowski will advise how many sessions are likely based on the extent of your veins.

Conditions we can treat with Sclerotherapy
Below are some of the conditions we can treat with Sclerotherapy. Click on the below to learn more or get in touch with us to request a consultation.
Aching Legs
Persistent leg aching or discomfort can point to an underlying vascular condition such as varicose veins, poor circulation or deep vein thrombosis. Getting the right diagnosis is the first step to lasting relief.
Chronic Leg Swelling
Persistent leg swelling can result from venous insufficiency, lymphoedema or conditions affecting the heart, kidneys or liver. Early specialist assessment helps identify the cause and prevent long-term complications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a chemical solution (sclerosant) is injected directly into unwanted veins, causing them to scar, collapse, and fade from view. It is used to treat spider veins, thread veins, and smaller varicose veins. The treated veins are gradually absorbed by the body over weeks to months.
