What is Pelvic Venous Congestion Syndrome?

Pelvic Venous Congestion Syndrome (PVCS) — also referred to as pelvic venous disorder (PeVD) — is a chronic condition caused by malfunctioning veins within the pelvis. When the valves in these veins stop working correctly, blood is unable to drain efficiently and instead flows backward, pooling in the pelvic region.

How It Develops

The ovarian and pelvic veins are responsible for draining blood from the uterus and surrounding structures. When the valves within these vessels weaken or fail, blood accumulates and the veins dilate — much like varicose veins in the legs, but hidden deep within the pelvis. This venous congestion creates sustained pressure that causes the characteristic symptoms of the condition.

Who is Affected?

PVCS most commonly affects women of reproductive age, particularly those who have had multiple pregnancies. The increased blood flow and hormonal changes associated with pregnancy can accelerate valve deterioration. However, the condition can also occur in women who have never been pregnant.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis involves a combination of imaging studies including pelvic ultrasound and, in some cases, venography. Treatment at Perth Vascular Clinic focuses on minimally invasive approaches such as ovarian vein embolisation, which blocks the faulty vessels and relieves symptoms without the need for open surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pelvic venous congestion syndrome?

Pelvic venous congestion syndrome (PeVD or PCS) is a condition caused by dilated, incompetent veins within the pelvis that cause chronic pelvic pain. Similar to varicose veins in the legs, these veins have failed valves that allow blood to flow backwards and pool, creating increased venous pressure.
