Understanding Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are visible just beneath the surface of the skin, most commonly appearing on the legs and feet. They develop when the valves inside the veins stop working properly, allowing blood to flow backwards and pool, causing the vein walls to stretch and bulge.

Symptoms

Many people with varicose veins experience aching, heaviness, or throbbing in the legs — symptoms that often worsen after long periods of standing or sitting. In more advanced cases, varicose veins can lead to skin changes, inflammation, and even venous leg ulcers.

Why Do Varicose Veins Develop?

The exact cause is not always clear, but risk factors include a family history of the condition, prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, obesity, and older age. The increased pressure on leg veins over time weakens the venous valves, leading to reflux and vein dilation.
